Evidence-based Hydration Strategies for Emergency Care
Presented by: PepsiCo Physiology and Health
Speaker: Antonio Pietro Tataranni, MD
Day & Time: Wednesday, October 7, 2:45pm – 3:30pm
Location: Exhibit Hall, Expert Theater Hall Two
This session explores the critical role of oral rehydration therapy (ORT) and intravenous (IV) fluid therapy in emergency departments (ED) settings, where rapid, evidence-based decisions are essential for managing dehydration. Understanding hydration through the dual lens of patient need and HCP decision-making is essential to identify where and how to position solutions.
The speaker will highlight the physiological and practical advantages of ORT as a safe, effective, and evidence-based first-line therapy for the treatment of mild to moderate dehydration in emergency department (ED) settings compared with intravenous (IV) hydration. ORT offers several key benefits when clinically appropriate, including non-invasive administration, reduced risk of complications, lower healthcare costs, improving patient comfort, and increased accessibility across outpatient, community, and resource-limited settings. IV therapy remains essential for severe dehydration, and for those patients unable to tolerate oral fluids; however, overuse in less critical cases may expose patients to unnecessary risks.
Practical strategies for integrating ORS into treatment protocols and patient education will also be discussed.
By the end of this session, attendees will be equipped to confidently evaluate when ORT may be the preferred hydration approach and apply evidence-based practices to enhance clinical outcomes.
