This presentation explores the complex medical realities of the very relevant topic of protest and civil unrest environments, where clinicians may be called to provide care to law enforcement, demonstrators, and bystanders—often simultaneously and under rapidly evolving threat conditions. Attendees will examine common injury patterns and weapons encountered on all sides, from crowd-control agents to improvised and lethal threats, and how these translate into real-world medical decision-making. We will also discuss medical overviews of care provided on both sides of the protest line including protester medics and medical care. Through an operational lens, the talk highlights lessons learned, ethical challenges, and practical strategies for delivering effective, neutral medical care while operating in the “grey zone” between safety, mission, and medicine.
