Key Situational Updates

  • ACEP urges all EDs to review Ebola protocols and screening procedures.
  • The US is implementing precautionary restrictions on travelers from affected countries.

The data in this SITREP reflect Bundibugyo virus disease (BVD) case information reported from the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) Ministry of Health (MoH), the Uganda (UG) MoH, and the France Ministry of Health.

Immediate steps for your ED

Review the full personal protective equipment (PPE) resource page from the University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC) Ebola Learning Center.

  • Make sure you have the right PPE equipment and supplies readily available in the ED.
  • Make sure your team understands how to don and doff correctly. This is different than COVID, as Ebola is transmitted by contact with blood or bodily fluids.

  • Ensure your staff knows what to do if a patient is identified as a possible patient with Ebola — which room to use, which staff enter the room, and what the risk factors are, etc.
  • If the patient is suspected of having Ebola, contact your internal infection control official. You might want to make staff aware of who this is and how to contact them.
  • Should you not be able to reach them, contact your local health department or call the state epi line.
  • If you cannot reach the state epi number, the CDC can be reached 24/7 at 770-488-7100. They will provide you with information, risk assessment, and arrange any transfers that are necessary.
