
Dr. Ralph Riviello is Professor and Chair of the Department of Emergency Medicine at The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, Long School of Medicine. A Pennsylvania native, he graduated from the University of Scranton, earned his medical degree from Hahnemann University in Philadelphia, and completed his Emergency Medicine residency at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh, where he served as Chief Resident.
Dr. Riviello has demonstrated a longstanding commitment to leadership in organized emergency medicine. He served on the Board of Directors of the Pennsylvania Chapter of the American College of Emergency Physicians (PACEP), ultimately becoming Chapter President. He also served as Course Director for the Chapter’s Written Board Review Course and Scientific Assembly. Nationally, he represented Pennsylvania in the ACEP Council for ten years, served on the National Chapter Relations Committee, and remains active on the ACEP Public Health Committee, contributing to the development and revision of national policies and educational resources.
A founding member of the ACEP Forensic Medicine Section, Dr. Riviello has held numerous leadership positions and helped advance the field of forensic emergency medicine. He served as co-editor of Care of the Sexually Abused or Assaulted Patient, 2nd Edition and the Domestic Violence Handbook, and is co-author of the long-running ACEP Now column, Forensic Facts.
Driven by a passion for forensic medicine, Dr. Riviello earned a Master of Science degree in Forensic Medicine from the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine. He has served as Medical Director for multiple forensic nursing programs and played a key role in developing the Philadelphia Sexual Assault Response Center. An internationally recognized expert, he has lectured extensively, contributed to national adult and pediatric sexual assault guidelines, helped develop the SANE Program Development and Operation Guide, and mentored numerous physicians pursuing careers in forensic medicine.
