John G. Wiegenstein Leadership Award – Alexander M. Rosenau, DO, CPE, FACEP

Dr. Alex Rosenau grew up in Philadelphia, PA, the son and first American-born child of surviving WW II immigrants Alexander and Ruth Rosenau. His wife Robin, two children, their spouses, five grandchildren, and three sisters are the joy of his life. Dr. Alex Rosenau is a 1981 graduate of the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine. He served in the National Health Service Corps, where he was recognized for bringing emergency care to rural Sullivan County. He completed his EM Residency at Michigan’s Botsford General Hospital.

During his career at Pennsylvania’s Lehigh Valley Health Network, Dr. Rosenau founded the Emergency Medicine Residency, which today trains 64 PGY1-4 residents. Dr. Rosenau’s many leadership roles included University of South Florida/LVHN Director of Academic Promotion, Director of the USF SELECT Program fourth-year class academic program, Endowed Chair for Emergency Medicine, Associate Director for EM of the Lehigh Valley Physicians’ Group, as well as numerous committees. He was the six-county regional Eastern EMS Council Medical Director for 25 years.

Dr. Rosenau’s 9-year service to the ACEP Board included his presidency (2013-2014). He is a former PACEP President and Chair of the Emergency Medicine Foundation. Dr. Rosenau was a developer of the ESI Triage system supported by AHRQ. The ESI Triage system is still used internationally and led to his recruitment as Physician Subject Matter Expert for the CDC/ORISE H1N1 triage effort. 

Following his ACEP presidency, Dr. Rosenau was appointed to the AMA Council of Ethical and Judicial Affairs. In his seventh year, he chaired CEJA. That year, the AMA  published the Modified Code of Ethics, culminating years of work by CEJA members and AMA expert staff. Retired from active clinical practice, Dr Rosenau continues engagement with the profession through ACEP’s Finance Committee.
