Council Award in Access, Belonging, and Community – Christopher L. Smith, MD, FACEP

Christopher Smith, M.D., FACEP, attended the University of Maryland, College Park, earning a Bachelor of Science in Neurophysiology and a minor in Spanish Literature and Culture. He returned to his hometown of Philadelphia to receive his medical degree from Drexel University College of Medicine. While at Drexel, he served as Chapter President of the Student National Medical Association (SNMA), later going on to serve as Regional Director of SNMA.

He completed his residency in Emergency Medicine across the river at Cooper University Hospital in Camden, NJ. South Jersey’s only Level I Trauma Center.

Dr. Smith has held several leadership roles during his medical career. Since 2023, he has served as Chair of ACEP's Access, Belonging, and Community (ABC) Section and as a member of the ABC Committee, where he works to share best practices nationally on care and bias and to advance resolutions that further ACEP's core values. He also co-founded and co-led Vituity's BAAVC Enterprise Resource Group. Additionally, Dr. Smith has served with the Vituity Cares Foundation since 2020.

Dr. Smith is a board-certified emergency physician, currently practicing at Howard University Hospital in Washington, DC, where he serves as Assistant Medical Director with Vituity, a physician-owned democratic partnership. In this role, he has held responsibilities spanning Quality Director, Finance Director, and EMS liaison, improving operational efficiency, patient care, and communication across the DC/Metro region.

Dr. Smith is passionate about advocating for emergency physicians and the patients they serve. Through his work with the ABC Section and Committee, he champions efforts to reduce bias and expand access to care nationally, building on a career-long commitment to underserved communities. His leadership reflects a consistent ideal: ensuring that all patients, regardless of background, have equitable access to high-quality emergency care.
