The American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) supports the “Stop Corporate Takeovers of Physicians Act,” a bill that aligns with years of ACEP advocacy and policy priorities to ensure that medical decisions must be made by physicians, without interference.
The federal legislation is modeled after SB 951 in Oregon, a landmark law that Oregon House Majority Leader Ben Bowman calls “the strongest ban on corporate medicine in the country.” ACEP’s Oregon chapter was fundamental to the creation of that legislation.
The federal “Stop Corporate Takeovers of Physicians Act” is a welcome acknowledgment from Congress that physician autonomy and clinical independence must be protected.
ACEP policies further underscore that the physician-patient relationship is the moral center of medicine and must never be compromised. Ongoing work with the American Medical Association seeks to build a coalition within the house of medicine to support this important aspect of patient protection.
ACEP will continue to work with the bill’s sponsors to advance policies that preserve the integrity of the physician-patient relationship.
