New Mexico ACEP Scores Win for Malpractice Reform

New Mexico recently passed landmark medical malpractice reform due largely to sustained advocacy by New Mexico ACEP.

The new law (HB 99) aims to stabilize liability costs and improve physician recruitment and retention statewide.

“This was a multi-pronged statewide coalition effort involving professional organizations, the public, the media, and ultimately the Governor’s office to urge legislators to pass reform,” said Aaron Snyder, MD, immediate past president of NM ACEP.

In a multi-year campaign, NM ACEP advocated for the new reform law through meetings, testimony, grassroots outreach, op-eds, and public education efforts.

Beginning in 2024, the chapter convened roundtable meetings to build a united advocacy front with leaders from other medical specialties and the New Mexico Medical Society.

NM ACEP was proud to lead the fight to ease emergency physicians’ financial pressures so they can focus on patient care.
