VACEP Shapes New Violence Reporting Law

New state law in Virginia (HB 1489) expands reporting requirements for incidents or threats of violence against health care workers in the state.

The Virginia chapter of ACEP (VACEP) was a key voice in a workgroup that updated the original law with new requirements for public reporting effective January 2027.

“VACEP and ACEP will always support policies that help stop workplace violence. Data alone do not protect healthcare staff or patients, but public reporting is meaningful progress that will translate into more transparency and accountability, greater protections, and safer working environments.”

—VACEP president Joran Sequeira, MD, FACEP

Virginia joins Utah, New York, Ohio, and other ACEP chapters that are instrumental in efforts to pass or strengthen laws that improve protections for emergency physicians and care teams.
