A new state law strongly supported by the Washington chapter of ACEP (WA-ACEP) bans most forms of non-compete agreements, protecting emergency physicians’ autonomy across Washington state.
“Non-compete agreements can restrict patient access to their doctors and disrupt continuity of care. Emergency medicine physicians in Washington state will now have increased autonomy and more flexibility in employment.”
—WA-ACEP President Sarah Hansen, MD
Effective June 2027, HB 1155 will ban nearly all non-competes in the state, giving emergency physicians the freedom to determine where they want to live and work. WA-ACEP supported the ban on non-competes, sharing the chapter’s position of support for the legislative record and in conversations with legislators.
This win comes after similar ACEP-supported legislation was signed into law in neighboring Oregon, clear evidence that ACEP’s fight to protect emergency physician autonomy across the country is working.
ACEP advocacy empowers every emergency physician to pursue a career that best suits their needs and interests.
