Wilderness and Travel Medicine courses address practice gaps in knowledge, competence, and application by preparing physicians in basic aspects of improvised care, rescue, and evacuation. This course helps establish a set of treatment priorities for care of the sick or injured in wilderness settings. The course allows participants to recognize the pathophysiology and treatment of a variety of medical problems commonly encountered in wilderness environments and setting remote from hospital or definitive care. The course prepares physicians to incorporate strategies into practice for more effective initial assessment, diagnosis and emergency management of conditions in wilderness settings to improve outcomes. "Field skills" are demonstrated and performed to enable physicians to provide emergency care in remote settings.
