Healthcare and public health workers face significant stressors when responding to a range of disasters and emergencies. Despite lessons learned from disasters about how people tend to react to these situations and evidence about which strategies are most helpful, many emergency responders report feeling unprepared for the aftermath due to insufficient routine staff support, cultural and societal barriers to sharing response experiences, and implementation of well-meaning but ineffective solutions. Panelists will discuss how to recognize and respond to the effects of acute stress and strategies for building healthy work environments that support overall staff resilience, both day-to-day and during disasters.
