The American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) invites applications for the next Editor in Chief of Annals of Emergency Medicine. An official journal of ACEP, Annals of Emergency Medicine is the leading journal in the specialty of emergency medicine.

Title: Editor in Chief
Reports to: Board of Directors, American College of Emergency Physicians.
Objectives
- That Annals of Emergency Medicine adheres to the mission of the College: to promote the highest quality of emergency care and to be the leading advocate for emergency physicians, their patients, and the public.
- That Annals of Emergency Medicine continues to provide state-of-the-art publication of research findings and educational reviews relevant to the specialty of emergency medicine.
Scope
- Has autonomy and responsibility for the journal’s editorial content and scheduling thereof.
Responsibilities
- Responsible for the overall content of the journal and editorial direction.
- Ensures the educational value and integrity of the journal.
- Supports the preparation and realization of strategic editorial plans.
- Appoints an editorial board, whose members serve in an advisory capacity. Editorial board appointments should result in the development and maintenance of a diverse board that reflects the gender, racial and generational diversity of the specialty. Board members should possess extensive research experience and the necessary critical, evaluative, and editorial skills to fulfill their assigned role.
- Additional responsibilities regarding the Annals Editorial Board:
- Conduct one editorial board meeting per year, which may be in person or virtual depending upon availability of funding
- Schedule other regular contact with the board as necessary and appropriate.
- Decide the levels, roles, and responsibilities of the board, and create letters of agreement and terms for their service.
- Monitor performance of board members in conjunction with the editorial office.
- Assist with training and educating the board as necessary and applicable.
- Establishes written policies regarding peer review, including the selection and assignment of reviewers and methods of quality improvement.
- Publishes ACEP Policy Statements and Clinical Policies as presented without peer review and with the understanding that the editorial board of the journal will not be held responsible for the content of such statements.
- Manages activities and policies in close collaboration with Annals’ staff director, including adhering to schedules and budgets established for the development and production of Annals.
- Provides written reports on a quarterly basis, and verbal reports as requested, to the ACEP Board of Directors regarding journal activities.
Qualifications
- Be an ACEP Member in good standing.
- Demonstrated scholarship and recognized leadership in advancing the specialty of emergency medicine and the content areas for the journal.
MD/DO or equivalent and should be actively involved in the practice of the specialty of emergency medicine.
- Demonstrated excellence in an academic environment as well as membership and active role in scientific editorial organizations such as the World Association of Medical Editors (WAME), the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE) and/or the National Academy of Medicine (NAM).
- Extensive authoring and editing experience in prominent, peer-reviewed scholarly journals and a proven record of accomplishment for editing and operational excellence and timeliness.
- Understanding of editorial, ethical, and political sensitivities involved when accepting and soliciting journal content.
- Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills.
- Excellent leadership skills, in particular the ability to motivate and inspire teams.
- Strong sense of ethics and integrity, including a clear understanding of the ethical guidelines for scholarly publishing.
- Commitment to meet the time demands of the Editor in Chief position.
