Continuing Medical Education Credit Information

Needs Assessment

Emergency medicine is an entirely patient-driven “24/7” specialty practiced in small rural hospitals, community and suburban medical centers, large, urban, university-based tertiary care centers, and, truly, in any other facility to which patients present for emergency medical care. The “body of knowledge” that is emergency medicine crosses all specialties, and the patients come from all age groups and socioeconomic backgrounds, presenting with conditions that range in severity from primary care to life threatening. For these reasons, emergency physicians must be prepared to care for patients of any age at any time with any condition at any acuity. The need for continuing medical education is paramount to ensure that emergency physicians are knowledgeable and skilled in the diagnosis and treatment of essentially any emergency medical condition. Critical Decisions in Emergency Medicine meets this educational need by presenting 24 “lessons” each year on topics chosen from “The Model of the Clinical Practice of Emergency Medicine” – the document that outlines, in detail, the emergency medicine “core content” as taught in residency training programs. Each Critical Decisions lesson is case-based and presents practical, hands-on patient-care information by answering a series of “critical decisions” questions about the patient’s presentation and progression. Because Critical Decisions is a subscription publication, participants do not have to seek out the information: it is delivered to them at the same time every month in a format designed for ease of use and practicality.
