Update on the 2020 Primer

Despite the many challenges of COVID-19 pandemic, dozens of academic emergency physicians have completed their chapters in the new 2020 primer, titled "Developing a Resident Research and Scholarly Activity Program in Emergency Medicine: A Primer." This book was funded by 2019-2020 Section grant funding from ACEP and is intended to be a supplement to the 2012 Primer, "Emergency Care Research: A Primer". The 2012 Primer on emergency care research (ECR) is a great reference for "how-to" conduct ECR, but additional guidance is needed for those who wish to facilitate resident ECR and, more generally, their scholarly activities. Resident-level scholarly activities represent a specific niche within ECR, with their own unique requirements and challenges. The target audience for this Primer is EM residency leadership and EM research directors who wish to maximize the value of the scholarly activities of their EM residents. Almost all chapters have been submitted and the Section Editors (Chadd Kraus, Gentry Wilkerson, Gary Gaddis, and Chuck Cairns), Loren Rives, and I are finalizing the book chapters in the coming months. Unfortunately, COVID has delayed the release of our book, so we expect the content to be finalized in November and final copy to be edited in December. We hope to have the final e-book available in March 2021 for ACEP members.

The chapters (and authors) of this Primer are:

1 – How Research and Scholarly Activity Enrich the Resident Experience
(Bryan Kane, Robert Ehrman, Adrienne Malik, Sarathi Kalra)

2 – Defining and Structuring Your Scholarly Activity / Resident Research Program
(Esther Chen, Michelle Lall, Jessica Fujimoto)

3 – Types of Research / Scholarly Activity
Carlos Camargo, Nidhi Garg, Christopher Bennett

4 – Motivating Residents to Engage in Scholarly Activity and Research
(Anne Messman, Elizebeth Dubey, Laura Smylie, Kelsey Vargas)

5 – Resources That You Will Need to Succeed
(Daniel Keyes, Hope Ring)

6 – Common Pitfalls to the Successful Resident Research / Scholarly Activity Program
(James d’Etienne, Deborah Diercks, Jason West)

7 – How to Define a Resident-Level Research / Scholarly Activity Project
(Gary Gaddis, R Gentry Wilkerson, Bram Dolcourt, Erik Olsen, Claire Pearson)

8 – Designing a Worthwhile Retrospective Study
(Vikhyat Bebarta, John Wilburn, Marc-Antony Velilla)

9 – Conducting a Literature Review
(Ted Gaeta, Mack Sheraton)

10 – Funding Mechanisms for Resident Research Projects
(Chuck Cairns, Stacey House)

11 – How and Where to Present the Results of a Resident Research / Scholarly Activity Project
(Alexander Limkakeng, Wendy Coates, Mary McLean, Chinwe Ogedegbe)

12 – Emergency Care Research Fellowships
(Michelle Lin, Lynne Richardson, Mark Probst)

13 – Pros and Cons of Implementing a Strict Resident Research Activity Requirement
(Edward Panacek, Sarathi Kalra)

14 – The Value of a Mentor
(Chuck Cairns, Joshua Davis)

The final product will be published as a digital e-book online and will be made available on the ACEP website as an official ACEP publication. Thanks, everyone, for your support!
