Maria Moreira, MD, FACEP

Maria Moreira, MD, FACEP, has served as the editor-in-chief for PEERcert+ for MyEMCert since 2020. Dr. Moreira is the medical director of continuing education and simulation at Denver Health in the Office of Education, director of professional development and well-being for the Denver Health Emergency Department, and an associate professor of emergency medicine at the University of Colorado School of Medicine. She previously served as program director of the Denver Health Residency in Emergency Medicine from 2010 to 2018 after 5 years as an associate program director. Dr. Moreira received her medical degree from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey – Robert Wood Johnson Medical School and completed her emergency medicine residency at Denver Health and Hospital Authority, where she served as chief resident in her final year of training.

Medical education has been the focus of Dr. Moreira’s career. While she has concentrated for many years on resident training, she has also co-directed several elective curriculums for medical students at the University of Colorado School of Medicine. Additionally, she is an ATLS instructor and co-director of both the Rocky Mountain Trauma and Emergency Medicine Conference and the Rocky Mountain Winter Conference on Emergency Medicine. She has also served on the Education Committee for the Annual CO ACEP Symposium on Emergency Medicine.

Nationally, she is an active member of the Council of Residency Directors in Emergency Medicine (CORD) and served as president of the organization from 2019 to 2020. She is the section editor for adult trauma for UpToDate and co-editor for Communication in Emergency Medicine and Emergency Medicine Secrets. She has authored multiple publications (book chapters and peer-reviewed publications) and serves as a reviewer for The Western Journal of Emergency Medicine.

Dr. Moreira has lectured regionally and nationally on both core content and medical education topics at multiple conferences, including ACEP Scientific Assembly, CORD Academic Assembly, the Society of Emergency Medicine’s Annual Meeting, the National Nurse Practitioner Symposium, the Society of Air Force Clinical Surgeons, the Rocky Mountain Winter Conference on Emergency Medicine, and the Rocky Mountain Trauma and Emergency Medicine Conference. She has received local, regional, and national teaching awards, including the John Marx Education Award from the CO ACEP Chapter, the ACEP National Emergency Medicine Faculty Teaching Award, and the Denver Health Medical Staff Outstanding Teacher Award. In March 2022, Dr. Moreira also received the Dr. Michael P. Wainscott Program Director Award from CORD for her extraordinary accomplishments and contributions to emergency medicine graduate education.
