About ACEP’s Reproductive Health Section

The Reproductive Health Section seeks to advance excellence and clarity in emergency department reproductive healthcare by empowering emergency physicians through evidence-based protocols, education, advocacy, and leadership. The term “reproductive health care” refers to medical issues related to reproductive and sexual health for both sexes and includes ectopic pregnancy, early pregnancy loss management, pregnancy of unknown location management, counseling for and provision of contraception, emergency contraception, management of pregnancy-related complications (including pre-partum, peri-partum, and post-partum complications), pregnancy options counseling, and sexually transmitted infection screening and treatment.

Reproductive healthcare is bread-and-butter emergency medicine. If I had a dollar for every patient I’ve cared for with first-trimester bleeding, ectopic pregnancy, early pregnancy loss, or an STI concern, I could probably retire right now.
