Assistant Editor, PEER


Educational Products


Provides editorial assistance for the creation of digital educational products. Formats, copy edits and proofreads.

Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Assists with publishing PEERprep for Physicians, PEERprep for Programs, and PEERcert+, including coordinating the work of the Editorial Board and contributors; sending instructions to Item Authors and Section Editors; maintaining databases and permissions logs; processing content through workflows; tracking submissions; formatting, copy editing, and proofreading content per AMA style; checking and copy editing references; incorporating changes; coordinating art and multimedia development; performing photo research; securing permissions; preparing approved content for production; uploading content to the learning management system; and providing sample questions to EMRA.

  2. Assists with publishing other Educational Products titles, including coordinating the work of authors and editors; processing content through workflows; formatting articles and chapters; copy editing and proofreading content per AMA style; verifying and copy editing references; incorporating changes; performing photo research; securing permissions; and preparing approved content for production.

  3. Provides administrative support for PEERprep for Physicians, PEERprep for Programs, and PEERcert+, including setting up authors in the writing system; tracking content submissions; preparing Question Tracker Forms and PEER author packs; sending reminders; arranging complimentary subscriptions; obtaining author and editor disclosure statements; creating Editorial Board contracts and processing payments; and maintaining historical files.

  4. Assists with publishing committee and section projects, including Improvement in Medical Practice activities, as needed.

  5. Assists with the creation of multimedia content, including infographics, slides, websites, webinars, podcasts, and videos.

  6. Coordinates the work of publishing contractors.

  7. Works with editors and authors to devise social media content, blog posts, and website content; assists in marketing campaigns; and writes copy to promote various educational products.

  8. Uploads digital content into the learning management system.

  9. Updates content for product websites and the ACEP store.

  10. Responds to product inquiries, requests for information, group sales requests, and other customer service items as needed.

  11. Maintains written procedures for all processes.

  12. Performs other duties as assigned.

ABEM; authors; commercial publishers; editors; education and publishing professionals in other organizations; Education Steering Committee and subcommittees; legal counsel; third-party editors, proofreaders, project managers, and vendors

Required Education and Experience

  1. Bachelor’s degree in English, journalism, biology, or a related field.

  2. Two years of related editorial experience, including working with authors, graphic designers, artists, copy editors, and other freelancers; experience with print and digital publications and applications; word processing; and working with a variety of software programs, such as desktop publishing, graphics programs, and databases.

  3. Excellent copy editing and proofreading skills. Ability to pass a grammar and/or editing test.

Other Desired Qualifications

  1. Experience in a large medical or scientific nonprofit organization or science publishing

  2. Excellent communication skills, highly organized, and detail oriented

  3. Certificate in editing, medical editing, or technical writing, or a strong interest in becoming a medical editor

  4. Knowledge of AMA Manual of Style or Chicago Manual of Style

  5. Ability to work under and meet deadlines and budgets

  6. Experience in graphic design and/or multimedia creation, including the Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator, Photoshop, Premiere Pro, Audition, and Acrobat)

  7. Experience with photo research, permissions, and usage rights

  8. Experience with marketing and social media campaigns

  9. Self-starter, creative, able to make independent decisions

  10. Strong team player, able to work in a collaborative environment
