Directs the strategy, development, production, and delivery of dynamic and compelling educational publications in print, digital and other emerging formats. Functions as managing editor of Critical Decisions and other products. Provides project management, editing, layout and product ownership for assigned activities. Supervises educational publications staff.
Directs the overall strategy for educational publications including the plan for shifting to digital delivery platforms, development of new titles to support member needs, continual evaluation of the College’s publication portfolios, and opportunities to partner with publishers and other third parties.
Develops process for and manages digital publications and products including ways to improve and advance ACEP’s digital publications and dissemination; develop, implement and manage a digital publications and distribution strategy; provide digital content strategy support and recommendations; integrate existing traditional publications strategy and systems with new digital strategy.
Directs the work of contributors, staff, contractors, and vendors in the development and production of educational publications, to include working with authors and editors to plan content; contracting with authors, editors, reviewers, contractors, and vendors; developing schedules; monitoring workflow; adhering to budget and quality standards; supervising the work of staff, contractors, and vendors; and implementing publication launches.
Serves as managing editor for Critical Decisions in Emergency Medicine, ACEP’s monthly CME periodical. Directs the development, implementation, and assessment of Critical Decisions’ long-term and short-term goals, to include performing continual product evaluations; initiating enhancements; introducing distribution channels and derivatives; managing website content and technical improvements; and directing the look and tone of the publication.
Manages the Critical Decisions Editorial Board, to include identifying and managing qualified editors; conducting annual editorial board meetings; and guiding the activities of the board.
Oversees the Critical Decisions publishing process, to include directing the content submission and review processes; ensuring the quality of the content and adherence to schedules; editing; ensuring compliance with ACCME guidelines; overseeing file preparation for print and digital production; sourcing artwork; managing production and proofreading; coordinating printing; and collaborating with other staff on distribution of the print and digital editions.
Responsible for oversight of the subscription management processes and fulfillment, monitoring new subscriptions, retention of existing subscribers and identifying new audiences for products.
Collaborates with marketing to promote educational publications, to include responding to market trends; analyzing competing products; identifying key marketing opportunities; writing copy as needed; implementing and evaluating promotions; monitoring subscription renewal strategies; representing publications at events; and enhancing ACEP’s visibility.
Works with Technology Services and other educational products staff to manage the ACEP Store, the College’s universal educational product digital catalog and e-commerce platform. Seeks opportunities to improve the customer experience and to increase sales revenue, feature relevant educational products from authors, publishers and internal ACEP work groups (ie sections, committees, and others). Serves a project lead for the ACEP Store exhibit space at appropriate live and virtual conferences, include the annual ACEP Scientific Assembly.
Manages ACEP’s Open Book e-reader and publishing platform through Hurix/Kitaboo.
Ensures ACEP products are appropriately represented on Amazon and other online marketplaces, meeting fulfillment and sales objectives.
Manages and expands ACEP’s relationships with publishers, publication vendors and others for developing royalty partnerships, preferred member pricing, and retail/wholesale opportunities.
Develops and manages system for the review and sales of Member publications.
Serves as staff liaison to the ACEP Publications Subcommittee, including utilizing findings from the annual educational needs assessment, ACEP strategic plan and committee objectives to guide the committee’s contributions to the Education Steering Committee.
Develops and regularly monitors departmental budgets, product inventory, sales reports, cost of goods sold, and return on investment for publications.
Provides supervision to Assistant Editor, directing activities and priorities. Leads by example and provides constructive feedback and supports professional development.
Serves as a resource to all ACEP staff to support best practices in publishing, sharing insights and trends, and supporting the overall educational content strategy across the College.
Educational products, educational technologies, digital publishing, innovation and similarly focused conferences and other industry events are attended, and findings were researched and implemented as appropriate. Membership is maintained in appropriate publishing and educational organizations.

Eight years’ experience publishing print and digital content and managing editorial and production workflows.
Digital publications experience and knowledge of contemporary digital publications.
Familiarity with print publication processes and file preparation.
Five years’ experience editing clinical content according to the AMA Manual of Style.
Five years’ experience supervising editorial projects.
Five years’ experience designing educational publications.
Exceptional writing, editing, and communication skills.
Ability to multi-task in a fast paced and innovative environment, in collaboration with a multi-disciplinary team.
Familiarity with other creative, web and/or digital technologies and an openness to adapting to new technologies
Experience in a large, nonprofit medical or scientific organization preferred
Previous association management experience
