EMRA- Sports Medicine Division 2017-2018 Update

The Sports Medicine Division of the Emergency Medicine Residency Association (EMRA) was established three years ago. Our goal is to provide resources for medical students and emergency medicine residents who are interested in a sports medicine fellowship or a career in sports medicine as an emergency medicine physician. We established a comprehensive list of sports medicine fellowship programs, information on how to pursue a fellowship, guidance on how to get mentorship support, opportunities for electives, and various clinical resources.

During 2017-2018, we have been focused on several projects in pursuit of this mission:

  1. We created a robust sports medicine fellowship map that allows residents and students to know what opportunities are out there for emergency medicine trained residents who wish to match in a sports medicine fellowship. Each sports medicine fellowship has its own intricacies. They may take pediatric, internal medicine, family medicine, PM&R, or emergency residents. They may allow you to work in urgent care or in the ED as a fellow. Knowing these pertinent details helps residents make an educated decision on how to rank these fellowship programs based on their interests. We will be updating the current fellowship map on our website with these details.
  1. We recently released an EMRA Splinting Guide that can be accessed on our website. The guide provides a quick reference for various splinting techniques and indications. The PDF has illustrations of 11 different techniques, with complications and indications listed for guidance.
  1. We have been partnering with other EMRA Divisions and Committees. We designed a MedWAR course with the Wilderness Division at ACEP last year with a sports medicine theme.  Look for us again at the upcoming MedWAR at ACEP 2017 in Washington, DC.
  1. We will be working on instructional videos that demonstrate ultrasound guided regional block techniques as an alternative method for pain control in the emergency department. If you are interested in helping out, please contact us at the e-mail address below.
  1. Our most important mission is to provide medical students and residents the information needed for them to find their niche in emergency medicine.
