Dr. John Bailitz, MD, MBA, is an emergency physician, clinician-investigator, and educator whose scholarship has helped shape the national evolution of point-of-care ultrasound and medical education. A 2011 graduate of the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) Emergency Medicine Basic Research Skills (EMBRS) course, he has dedicated his career to advancing emergency medicine through collaborative research, educational innovation, and the thoughtful implementation of new technologies into clinical practice. At Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, he serves as Vice Chair of Academic Affairs, Professor of Emergency Medicine and Medical Education, System Clinical Ultrasound Education Director, and Co-Director of the Center for Bedside Medicine Point-of-Care Ultrasound Program. His scholarship has helped establish national standards for point-of-care ultrasound education, competency assessment, fellowship training, and system-wide implementation while advancing educational innovation throughout emergency medicine.

Dr. Bailitz's research focuses on improving how point-of-care ultrasound is taught, evaluated, implemented, and integrated into patient care. He has served as a principal investigator and collaborator on multicenter clinical and educational studies, industry-sponsored artificial intelligence research, and national consensus initiatives that have informed fellowship training, competency assessment, educational best practices, and the adoption of point-of-care ultrasound across healthcare systems. His work has contributed to influential national guidelines, consensus statements, and educational frameworks that continue to shape residency and fellowship training, faculty development, and the evolution of emergency ultrasound as a mature academic discipline. His current research interests include artificial intelligence-enabled ultrasound, implementation science, competency assessment, educational innovation, and strategies to improve bedside diagnostic performance.

Throughout his career, Dr. Bailitz has paired impactful scholarship with national service to advance emergency medicine as a specialty. He has served in numerous leadership roles within the American College of Emergency Physicians, the American Board of Emergency Medicine, the Society for Clinical Ultrasound Fellowships, and the Society for Academic Emergency Medicine, including Chair of the American College of Emergency Physicians Education Committee and President of the Society for Clinical Ultrasound Fellowships. His collaborative leadership has helped establish fellowship accreditation standards, competency assessment processes, educational guidelines, and innovative educational programs that continue to influence emergency medicine training nationwide. In recognition of these contributions, he has received numerous national honors, including the Emergency Medicine Foundation Young Investigator Award, the American College of Emergency Physicians Ultrasound Section Lifetime Achievement Award, the Society for Academic Emergency Medicine Academy of Emergency Ultrasound Teaching Excellence Award, and the Academy of Emergency Ultrasound Titan in Education Award. Through his research, mentorship, and collaborative leadership, he remains committed to advancing scholarship that improves patient care while developing the next generation of clinician-investigators, educators, and leaders in emergency medicine.
