Al'ai Alvarez

Al’ai Alvarez, MD (@alvarezzzy), is a nationally recognized physician leader specializing in physician well-being, workforce inclusion, and emergency medicine at Stanford University.

As Director of Well-Being for Stanford Emergency Medicine and Director of the Stanford Center for Compassion and Altruism Research and Education (CCARE), he focuses on humanizing healthcare through evidence-based approaches to preventing clinician burnout, strengthening team performance, and advancing compassionate, well-being-centered leadership.

His work focuses on humanizing healthcare by helping individuals and teams grow, connect, and find purpose in high-performance environments. He aligns quality improvement, recruitment, and well-being to build more human-centered systems that strengthen inclusion and belonging.

Dr. Alvarez co-led the national High Performance Resuscitation Teams conference series in partnership with Mayo Clinic and the Mission Critical Teams Institute. The series brought together experts from healthcare, aerospace, sports, the military, special operations, fire and rescue services, and other high-stakes fields to examine how teams perform under pressure.

He was a 2021–2022 Faculty Fellow at the Stanford Byers Center for Biodesign. In 2020, he joined the inaugural class of ambassadors for Applied Compassion Training at Stanford CCARE. He also completed CCARE’s Compassion Cultivation Training and Awakening Humanity at Work programs.

From 2016 to 2021, Dr. Alvarez served as Assistant and Associate Residency Program Director for Stanford Emergency Medicine. His work focused on integrating well-being, patient experience, safety, representation, and belonging into medical education. He also co-founded and co-chaired the largest national mentoring initiative in emergency medicine for underrepresented faculty, medical students, and residents through ACEP and EMRA.

Dr. Alvarez regularly delivers grand rounds, keynotes, and workshops at institutions across the United States and internationally, including Harvard, Yale, UT Southwestern, McMaster University, and the National University of Singapore. He has also presented at global conferences in Singapore, Uruguay, Switzerland, and Australia. His talks explore physician well-being, design thinking, inclusion and belonging, self-compassion, high-performance teams, and compassionate, well-being-centered leadership.
