Chair's Corner

Will we see you in 2 weeks?  The Toxicology Section meeting is on Monday 10/28/2019 1pm-3pm -- Hyatt Regency, Centennial Ballroom B?  We would love for you to join us and Nicklaus Brandehoff, M.D., [Assistant Clinical Professor of Emergency Medicine and Medical Toxicology at UCSF-Fresno, Volunteer Faculty at Rocky Mountain Poison and Drug Center, and Medical Director of the Asclepius Snakebite Foundation] for his presentation: "Snake Venomics and Antivenomics."

Toxicology Section Councillor, Jennifer Hannum will present updates on the Antidote App, as well as information from the council’s meeting. The following resolutions are up for debate, so please reply with any concerns/questions on these issues:

23 – Allow Emergency Physicians to Prescribe Buprenorphine
• Advocate for the removal of the DEA X-waiver requirement for emergency physicians who prescribe a bridging course of buprenorphine for opioid use disorder

31 – Improving Emergency Physicians Utilization of Medication for Addiction Treatment
• Work with DEA and SAMHSA to minimize regulatory barriers for emergency physicians to enact meaningful OUD therapies, establish ED-specific OUD training, and advocate for the elimination of the X-waiver to initiate Medication Assisted Treatment from the ED

34 – Opposing Naloxone Addition to the Prescription Drug Monitoring Program
• Oppose legislation to add naloxone administration to the Prescription Drug Monitoring Program and work with chapters to develop strategies and supporting materials to stop such legislation

43 – Droperidol is Safe to Use in the ED
• Develop a policy statement and a clinical policy to guide members on the safe and effective use of droperidol for various indications in the ED based on existing medical evidence
