Sam Stellpflug, MD, FACEP
Toxicology Section Chair
Come join us at in Vegas! Check out the Toxicology Section at our ACEP16 meeting, Monday, October 17th, 1-3pm, Mandalay Bay Convention Center, Palm H.
This award winning section will be tackling some current issues in EM Toxicology, discussing some ongoing and upcoming projects, and we'll have the pleasure of hearing from and being able to pick the brain of a couple of leaders in our field. Dr. Frank Walter, the man behind Advanced Hazmat Life Support, is giving a talk and entertaining discussion on AHLS, its creation, its purpose, and what it took to get it off the ground. Lots of us have had the chance to go through AHLS as learners and instructors, but it will be really interesting to hear the background and also dive into future applications and implications of the course.
Joining Dr. Walter in sharing with us will be Dr. Jon Cole. Dr. Cole, Director of the Minnesota Poison Control System, is going to give us some insight into a recently published study (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/27102743) looking at ketamine vs haldol for the agitated prehospital patient.
As primary investigator of this project Dr. Cole experienced hoops and obstacles in dealing with public consent, FDA approval, and ultimately study execution logistics that were nearly insurmountable. His experience and the discussion we'll have surrounding it could prove invaluable for other researchers looking to take on such a project. Please come, listen, and discuss. If you have thoughts on how the Tox Section could better serve the College, let us know. If you have a tox-related project you'd like to have us help with, bring it to us. This will be a relaxed setting primed for discussion, and we look forward to having you with us.
