Quality Improvement & Patient Safety

QIPS At Scientific Assembly 2012

Infection Prevention in Emergency Care: Strategies to Improve Practice:

Preventing healthcare-associated infections is a national priority that directly effects hospital payment. Evidence-based practices to prevent infections can be difficult to implement in the Emergency Department (ED). This one-day conference will bring together health care providers and administrators including Emergency Physicians and Nurses, Infection Prevention practitioners, and Quality and Patient Safety administrators to identify key issues in infection prevention for EDs, review ‘best practice’ case studies of successful EDs, and develop a research agenda for Emergency Medicine.

Pre-Conference Workshops
Two pre-conference workshops may be of particular interest to QIPS members:
    • Urgent Matters: Coordinating and Improving Emergency Care in the Era of Reform. (Sun, Oct 7 12:45-5p.m.)
    • Infection Prevention in Emergency Care: Strategies to Improve Practice (Sun, Oct 7 8a-5p.m.)

The Quality Agenda:

Governmental agencies are currently trying to define EM practice and tie reimbursement to their vision of proper care. Standards are being developed regarding specific conditions, transitions of care, care coordination, ED throughput, and imaging. The speaker will discuss the upcoming priorities for quality patient care and safety likely to affect EM and how we can shape our quality measures.
