Emergency Ultrasound

Chair's Corner

John Bailitz, MD, FACEP

Congratulations to Dr. Vivek Tayal and Dr. Chris Raio on completion of the 2016 ACEP US Guidelines. Over the last several months, Vivek and Chris tirelessly collaborated with numerous section leaders to update this landmark policy. The ACEP Board of Directors just approved the revisions which will be published in an upcoming edition of Annals of Emergency Medicine.

Please review this brief update from ABEM regarding subspecialty accreditation:

“The American Board of Emergency Medicine (ABEM) continues to await word from the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) about an alternative form of specialty recognition called the Certificate of Focused Expertise (CFE). The ABMS has formed a task force to define this potential opportunity. Of note, ABEM has a director seated on the CFE Task Force.

ABEM communicates frequently with the ABMS and ABMS is keenly aware of ABEM’s desire that a determination about CFE be made quickly. In the meantime, ABEM is working to strengthen the support for Clinical Ultrasonography within the ABMS community. Once the ABMS has made a decision regarding the option of a CFE, then ABEM will have a better understanding of how next to proceed.”

As expected, our community is making progress slowly. Fellowship directors are encouraged to discuss the pro's and con's of accreditation with their ED chairman, Toxicology fellowship director, and local ACGME office Designated Institutional Official. Alternatively, please email myself or Dr. Schneider directly.

Dr. Alfredo Tirado and Dr. Troy Foster will be hosting the redesigned Ultrasound Management Course on Saturday, October 15th. The unique Core Track and Advanced Tracks offer targeted education for the new faculty just beginning an US program, or the experienced Director looking to innovate. Please add this outstanding event to your Scientific Assembly line up.
