ACADEMIC EMERGENCY PHYSICIANS
Botswana is a stable, well-resourced, democratic country in Southern Africa with a populationof around 2 million people. The capital city, Gaborone, is growing fast and is equipped with allof the facilities needed to function as a modern, cosmopolitan environment, includingbroadband and 3G communications, 5 star accommodation, dining, entertainment, sportsfacilities and easy access to stunning scenery and African wildlife. Gaborone is a 30-minutedrive from the border with South Africa, its southern neighbour.
The University of Botswana's Faculty of Health Sciences has opened Africa's newest School ofMedicine and is on schedule to establishing an adjacent new 400-bed Academic Hospital inGaborone, expected to be completed by 2014. While the new facility is being built, the Schoolof Medicine is working closely with the Princess Marina Referral Hospital in Gaborone.
In Botswana, trauma is an under-recognised 'second epidemic' to the problem of HIV/AIDSmortality, where it is recognised that Botswana has responded well to the epidemic.Postgraduate training in Emergency Medicine (4-year Master of Medicine) began in January2011. Exciting opportunities exist for Emergency Physicians to join the current staff inmanaging the training programme and in the development of emergency medical systems,thereby improving emergency care for the people of Botswana. Emergency Medicine Staff arealso involved in undergraduate medical training, which uses a Problem Based Learningapproach.
Minimum requirements are Emergency Medicine Specialty Training together with BoardCertification (US), Fellowship (Commonwealth) or equivalent recognition.
Emergency Physicians are sought at the levels of Lecturer (Clinical Instructor),Senior Lecturer (an experienced Assistant Professor), Associate Professor, andProfessor. Appointments will be made depending on qualifications, teaching andresearch experience.
Salaries are competitive within Southern Africa, with an additional 25% incentive offered oncompletion of contract, the duration of which ranges from 2 to 5 years.
Responsibilities depending on the position will include:
Postgraduate training design and implementation, Clinical practice and bedside teaching,Emergency medical system development, Guideline development, Outreach activities, MedicalStudent Education, and Research.
