  • Last week, President Biden nominated Chiquita Brooks-LaSure for the position of CMS Administrator and named Liz Fowler as the next director of the Center for Medicare & Medicaid Innovation (CMMI) within CMS. While Ms. Brooks-LaSure must be confirmed by the Senate, Dr. Fowler’s role does not require Senate confirmation and she can therefore start at any time.
  • ACEP was invited by OSHA to a meeting of health care industry leaders to strengthen COVID-19 workplace protections. We advocated for emergency physicians’ rights to be supplied effective PPE by their hospital, to wear their own PPE if they prefer, and to have access to peer support and mental health treatment without fear of professional reprisal.
  • On February 17, the Biden Administration announced new actions to expand COVID-19 testing, improve the availability of tests, and better prepare for the threat of variants. HHS and DOD will invest $650 million to expand testing opportunities for K-8 schools and underserved congregate settings, such as homeless shelters and another $815 million to increase domestic manufacturing of testing supplies and raw materials that have created shortage issues.
  • CMS announced a special open enrollment period for the Affordable Care Act Health Insurance Marketplace that started on Monday, February 15 and will last through Saturday, May 15. The opportunity to sign up for healthcare coverage will be available to consumers in the 36 states that use gov. Further, at least 13 States plus the District of Columbia, which operate their own Marketplace platforms, have decided to offer a similar opportunity.
