One of the important values of MCEP membership is having your rights and interests represented in Lansing. As a strong, unified professional organization we have taken many steps to empower emergency physicians and protect our patients.
MCEP has contracted with Muchmore, Harrington, Smalley & Associates, one of the most reputable lobbying groups in the state, to keep up with the multiple bills introduced in Lansing and to introduce some of our own. Some of our ongoing activities include:
- Medical Liability Reform (Gross negligence standard for EMTALA related care)
- Medicaid Expansion
- Prudent Layperson Definition Legislation
- Medicaid 2 Tier Payment System
- Funding of a Statewide Trauma System
- Safety Helmet Legislation
Both MCEP staff and individual members have worked to form relationships on a state level, resulting in open communication, increased visibility, and inclusion with agencies and organizations such as the Michigan Department of Public Health, The Michigan Legislature, The Michigan Hospital Association, and The Michigan State Medical Society.
MCEP is committed to protect the longevity and future of individual physicians, our patients, and emergency medicine as a specialty. This includes involvement in education of medical students, residents, emergency physicians, our patients, and the general public. We promote policies that preserve the integrity and independence of emergency medical practice. We support emergency physician representation within medical organizations and academic institutions. MCEP represents the interest of all Michigan emergency physicians.
