Improving Emergency Care for Children with Sickle Cell Disease: Current Therapies and New Innovations

Sickle cell disease (SCD) is a multisystem, progressive disorder that affects approximately 100,000 Americans, primarily of African and Hispanic descent. Children with SCD often require care in emergency departments (EDs) for the treatment of pain due to
vaso-occlusive episodes.

This CME session will focus on treatment innovations for the ED management of pediatric sickle cell-related pain and highlight current clinical trials that may lead to significant changes in the care of these vulnerable patients.

Myth or Reality: The Rabies Threat in the US and the Role of Postexposure Prophylaxis

This non-CME educational program will cover the prevalence of rabies in the U.S., pathogenesis, diagnosis, and most up-to-date treatment guidelines and best practices.

Dr. Stephen Scholand is an Infectious Diseases consultant with a passion for prevention. He has over 20 years of clinical experience, including work overseas in medically underserved areas in Thailand and the Philippines. He is an international expert on rabies, probably the ultimate in vaccine preventable diseases. He is passionate about preventing other diseases, such as influenza, bacterial meningitis, tetanus and a host of others. He is well published in the world of infectious diseases and enjoys teaching others about various topics in ID. He’s a compassionate doctor as well, and enjoys taking care of patients every day at the bedside. Dr. Scholand is the son of the late Dr. Joseph F Scholand, who practiced Infectious Diseases and Internal Medicine in New Britain, Connecticut, for over 30 years.
