Frustration with EHR and EDIS usability and user experience is a daily experience for most of us. It's no coincidence after the HITECH Act incentivized rapid adoption without time for vendors and hospital systems to design and customize their products for specialty-specific and local workflows--not to mention following standards for usability. Based on trajectory for usability in other industries, it is quite possible that optimizing usability and the user experience will be the next wave of improvement for health IT. But this won't happen overnight, it may take decades. The HIMSS EHR Usability Task Force 2013 white paper on usability maturity for healthcare systems can give you a window into the road ahead.
