Immediate Past Chair
Year in Review:
The 2013-2014 year has been both busy and productive for our section. It has been a tremendous experience serving as section chair, and I cannot thank enough all of you who have contributed to the progress we have made. I just wanted to review the true highlights of the year before passing the torch into the capable hands of Dr. Lewiss.
AIUM Practice Guideline for the Performance of the FAST Examination - This guideline update was completed with the help of multiple section authors. The document is currently awaiting final approval from other organizations prior to publication.
Definition of Clinical Ultrasonography - Approved January 2014 by the ACEP Board as policy statement. This is an important statement from our section and the college separating clinical ultrasound (US) from the physical examination.
Emergency Ultrasound Certification by External Entities - Approved June 2014 by the ACEP Board as policy statement. This policy was put in place at the request of section members who in 2013 at Scientific Assembly requested that section leadership and ACEP clearly deliver a position on certification. This was an important step for our ultrasound community voicing our stance on external certification for emergency ultrasound.
Emergency Ultrasound Imaging Criteria Compendium - John Kendall led this critical document revision and update. New additions include: ocular, lung, and soft tissue/MSK ultrasound. (publication pending)
Industry Communications - Mark Byrne led the updated Essential Machine Features Guide, and completed the Emergency Ultrasound Workflow White paper.
Clinical Ultrasound Accreditation Program (CUAP) - Tremendous effort from both section members and ACEP staff. Mike Mallin, Jerry Chiricolo and Vivek Tayal are leading and we are close to a launch date.
Resolution 1(14): Recognition of Marilyn Bromley’s Outstanding Service to the Section - Last but not least many of you alongside ACEP staff helped to draft Resolution 1 commending Marilyn Bromley. Her expertise, effort, and guidance were truly amazing to see firsthand during my tenure. Because of her work, many of us are utilizing ultrasound and taking better care of our patients. Thank you Marilyn. You will be missed!
There were many, many other great accomplishments by section members throughout the course of the year. Thank you for allowing me to serve as your section chair.
