Dr. Perina is Professor of Emergency Medicine with tenure and prehospital division director at the University of Virginia, Charlottesville, VA. She received her medical degree from the West Virginia University School of Medicine, and completed her residency at Richland Memorial Hospital, University of South Carolina School of Medicine. She is a Past-President of the American Board of Emergency Medicine (ABEM) and the Council of Emergency Medicine Residency Directors (CORD). She has also served as a Board member for several other national organizations, including the Society for Academic Emergency Medicine (SAEM) and the National Association of EMS Physicians (NAEMSP). She has served on the ACGME Emergency Medicine Residency Review Committee, and served as Chair of the Accreditation Council on Continuing Medical Education (ACCME). She was elected to the ACEP board in 2013 and again in 2016. Dr. Perina has authored over 38 peer-reviewed articles and 45 chapters. She was the principal investigator for several state and NHTSA federal grants, including one of the first EMSC grants. She is also one of the original authors of the PALS Course, and served as national PALS faculty for many years. She currently serves as the ACEP Board Liaison to the Pediatric EM Committee and Pediatric EM Section, EMS Committee and EMS section, Forensic section, Wellness committee and Wellness section. She also serves on the CEDR steering and education committees. She is also serves as the liaison to the American College of Surgeons- Committee on Trauma (ACS-COT). Dr. Perina is currently Chair of the ACEP Board.
