Two 600 passenger luxury cruise ships sailing to Europe, the Middle East, Asia, the Caribbean, and South America. Physicians and nurses will practice four month contracts. Physicians must have at least three years of postgraduate training in general practice, internal medicine, emergency medicine or critical care, or board certification or similar international certification or equivalent training and experience in any of the following areas: emergency medicine, family practice, or internal medicine. Carnival Cruise Lines offers emergency physicians and primary care physicians with at least three years emergency medicine experience opportunities to staff medical centers on board Carnival's more than 20 cruise ships. Assignments for full-time physicians typically are four to six months. A roster of locum tenens physicians is maintained for filling occasional short-term assignments.

Benefits typically include senior officer status, round-trip transportation from your residence to the ship, uniforms, meals, private furnished cabin including refrigerator, telephone, computer with Internet access, and daily housekeeping service. Indemnification and health care (with restrictions) are also provided.

Clipper Cruise Line specializes in small cruise ship expedition-type experiences in remote areas of Alaska, Russia, Japan, Asia, and South Pacific aboard the Clipper Odyssey. The ship doctor must be able to handle a multitude of general medical problems and consider a number of solutions, with limited alternatives/supplies available.

Flexibility, availability, and affability, with a teamwork attitude, are important factors of this position. Daily sick-call hours and emergency availability to passengers and crew members.

Ship doctor applicants should have a current US state licensure and CV; copy of their photo page passport; ACLS or equivalent; good general health/positive attitude; and be available for 3 to 6 weeks tour of duty. Preference given to past ship physician experience and/or military service. Computer skills essential. Board Certified/Eligible. EM, FM, IM, or Surgery preferred. No labs, X-ray, or nurse available.

Contracts provide medical liability insurance, air/land travel to and from ship, and cruise itinerary for doctor and comp cruise for companion.

Physicians employed by Costa Cruise Lines are qualified ship's physicians, having a license issued by the Italian Health Ministry after an examination on medicine, surgery, gynecology, naval hygiene, and two foreign languages (English compulsory, second language to be chosen by the candidate). The examination takes place every five years. All our physicians have a license in basic life support and advanced cardiac life support. Their contracts usually last from one to four months. Medical liability coverage is provided. All nurses are qualified as professional nurses and their contracts usually last seven months, after which they may take a two-month vacation.

Norwegian Cruise Lines staffs 11 ships worldwide, with two physicians, and two to three nurses. All medical staff crewmembers are full-time professionals who generally sign on for contracts of 14 weeks of duty, followed by 7 weeks of vacation.

Physicians are expected to be conversant in English, hold a medical degree from a recognized college or university and a current valid medical license (international or US), and maintain certification in advanced cardiac life support. They must hold board certification or similar international certification in emergency medicine, family practice, internal medicine, or general practice. The Ship's Physician must have at least three years of postgraduate experience.

Nurses are expected to be conversant in English; hold a bachelor's degree in nursing from a recognized college or university and a current valid nursing license in their country, state or province of origin, and maintain certification in advanced cardiac life support. The nurse must have a minimum of three years of postgraduate clinical experience, with practical experience in advanced cardiac life support.

Norwegian Cruise Line prefers applicants with backgrounds in emergency medicine, intensive care or coronary care.

Princess Cruises operates 16 luxury cruise vessels sailing worldwide. All of our medical facilities are accredited to international health care standards and are also certified to ISO9001:2008. The facilities comprise physicians consulting rooms, exam and treatment rooms, in-patient beds including ICUs, X-ray, laboratory, and dispensary.

Ship's physicians are responsible for the medical and public health care of multinational crew and passengers. Tours of duty are approximately four months duration followed by a six-week vacation. Promotion to senior physician is possible following satisfactory performance reviews. The medical teams vary depending on the size of the ship and the itinerary but mostly consist of two physicians (one senior who is head of department) and a team of four nurses.

Recruitment: Applicants must have at least three years postgraduate experience in primary care and emergency medicine and should preferably be in possession of valid advanced cardiac and trauma life support certificates. The Universal Application Form can be downloaded from the ACEP Web site. The form can be used to apply for a position at most cruise lines. It is recommended that interested physicians send the cruise line a letter of interest and CV in addition to the application form. Individual cruise lines may also require you to fill out their own application form and submit it with documentation of your credentials.
