Dr. Robert D. Barriatua has displayed a longstanding commitment to providing high-quality, compassionate care to his patients. He strongly believes in finding genuine feelings of caring inside himself for every patient he sees, and not simply offering up a polite presentation that earns points on patient satisfaction surveys.

Dr. Barriatua serves on Oregon ACEP’s board of directors, and regularly participates in continuing medical education courses to stay current on the science of emergency medicine.

Following his training in plastic surgery at the University of Virginia, Dr. Richard F. Edlich accepted the position of acting director of the emergency room at the University of Virginia Health Science Center. Working with gifted physicians, basic scientists, nurses and students, Dr. Edlich coordinated the development of an emergency medical system that has been replicated throughout the nation. 

The emergency medical system included state legislation for sexual assault victims, public access by the 9-1-1 telephone number, training of rescue squads, emergency radio communication systems, trauma centers, poison control centers, an emergency medical plan for the President of the United States, a national telecommunications system for the deaf and the first air medical transportation system in Virginia.


John MoorheadJohn C. Moorhead, MD, MS, FACEP

Dr. John C. Moorhead directed one of the early residencies in emergency medicine and is the founding chair of the department of emergency medicine at Oregon Health & Science University. Dr. Moorhead serves as delegate to the American Medical Association House of Delegates, chairs the AMA Section Council on Emergency Medicine, is a member of ABEM’s board of directors and serves as a representative to the American Board of Medical Specialties.

His ACEP leadership roles include chairing the Academic Affairs Committee, the 1997 and 1999 Workforce Studies, the Rural Workforce Task Force, and the Mentoring Task Force. Dr. Moorhead was ACEP President in 1998-1999 and received ACEP’s "John G. Wiegenstein Leadership Award" in 2003. A prolific author and lecturer, Dr. Moorhead has had a tremendous impact on emergency medicine by training emergency physicians and inspiring them to undertake leadership roles in shaping the specialty in the House of Medicine.

Dr. Gary Young’s most important career goals have been to provide quality patient care and quality teaching to his students. He has been medical director of three emergency departments, including oversight of clinical education at each. His clinical bedside research during his academic career helped him transition to health policy research projects with broader community impact. He has worked with ACEP, Oregon ACEP and California ACEP members in many capacities over the years, and has received numerous recognitions and honors for his work.

Dr. Young has written more than 100 publications and presentations, from research and reviews to policy pieces, with grant research focusing on health policy research. He has served on more than 100 committees and boards, from national and state accomplishments to local and hospital contributions. Dr. Young also serves as emergency department medical student course director at Sacred Heart Medical Center and as president of the board of Health Policy Research Northwest.
