Critical Care Medicine Programs

Attached is the EM Critical Care Database  for U.S. civilian critical care programs as of May, 2009.  The 2009 version now includes data on programs from 5 different specialties:  EM, Medicine, Surgery, Anesthesia, and Neurology.  It does not include Pulmonary-based programs.

Data currently exists on 59 of 80 active Surgery programs (74%), of which 24 will either consider EM applicants or have accepted them in past (41% of known programs, or 30% of the total number of programs).  In addition, there are several programs who have designated slots for EPs.

Data currently exists on 23 of 30 Medicine programs (77%), of which 14 will consider EM applicants (61% of known programs, or 47% of the total number of programs).

Data currently exists for 41 of 48 Anesthesia programs (85%), of which 20 will consider EM applicants (49% of known programs or 42% of the total number of programs).

Finally, data currently exists for only 6 of 43 NeuroCCM programs (14%), of which 5 (83% of known programs or 12% of the total number of programs) have accepted or indicated a willingness to accept Emergency physicians.

Twelve CCM programs currently have fellowship tracks intended specifically for EM-trained physicians!  These include reserved positions in programs accredited by the other specialities as well as other programs that are specifically intended for EPs.

In aggregate, we have data on 123 of 166 civilian non-Neurology or Pulmonary critical care programs, of which 66 programs have indicated a willingness to consider emergency physicians (54% of programs with data or 40% of all critical care fellowships).

This database is maintained for the benefit of EM residents considering additional training in critical care.  Our only means of improving or updating this database is via communications from applicants applying to these programs.  The database should not be considered the final word on a program's willingness to consider EM applicants (so ask them anyway).  In order to keep this database updated, it is vital that all applicants email their experiences to criticalcare.section@acep.org  so that this info can be forwarded to me.  In your email please include:  programs applied to (including specialty), receptivity to your application, your final decision (accepted, rejected, interviewed, etc.), and a few words about your subjective experience with the program.  Thank you!
