Economic Credentialing

The American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) is committed to high-quality, cost-effective care and recognizes the dual responsibility of emergency physicians to patients and society to employ prudent stewardship of health care resources. However, it is essential that the performance of emergency physicians not be judged solely on economic factors unrelated to quality of care. This practice would seriously undermine the independence of physician judgment in providing care that is in the patient's best interest.

ACEP strongly opposes the use of economic factors unrelated to quality of care or professional competency either in determining a physician's qualifications for initial or continuing hospital medical staff membership or privileges, or in evaluating physician performance within other health care organizations.
