Editorial Director

Department: Annals of Emergency Physicians
Basic Function: Plans; directs; and evaluates the activities, staff, and contractors involved with the publication of Annals by developing, recommending, and implementing goals, objectives, budgets, structure, and operational procedures to ensure timely and effective publication of Annals of Emergency Medicine.

 

Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Maintain Annals of Emergency Medicine as a leading peer reviewed journal in emergency medicine by providing overall management and direction of staff and processes used to develop the journal's print and digital editorial content and vision.
  2. Provide professional support to the Editor in Chief and Editorial Board in developing and implementing appropriate goals and strategic objectives for Annals, including acting as the primary liaison between ACEP staff, the Editor in Chief, and the Annals Editorial Board.
  3. Facilitate and coordinate Web-based peer review to ensure optimal manuscript turnaround time.
  4. Direct and oversee publisher relations to ensure successful production, marketing, advertising, Web presence, and promotion and distribution objectives are successful.
  5. Coordinate communication between the publisher and ACEP, ensuring that contracts, reports, approvals, royalty payments, and other aspects of the current publishing contract are implemented, and by acting as the primary liaison between the publisher and the Annals Editorial Board.
  6. Provide direction and coordinate communication with ACEP staff and members in using Annals as a communications vehicle with the membership and for other audiences. This includes but is not limited to providing editing suggestions and advice on press releases and media briefings designed to promote Annals.
  7. Provide requested information and input to ACEP in negotiating and developing appropriate contracts with the publisher, the Web-based peer review provider, and all editors who provide services based upon contractual agreements.
  8. Plan and budget for Annals in conjunction with normal College processes.
  9. Provide administrative and professional support to committees, task forces, and sections as assigned.
  10. Attend educational and business meetings as necessary, fulfilling a role as an ambassador for the journal and for ACEP while traveling to meetings on behalf of the College.

Reports to: Associate Executive Director, Education and Membership line of service
Supervises: Annals Managing Editor, Editorial Associate, Editorial Assistant
Internal Contacts: All staff
External Contacts: Annals Editor in Chief and Editorial Board, Annals consultants and authors, members, ACEP Board of Directors and other leaders, the publisher, staff of other publishers and associations, industry contacts, and Web-based peer review providers

 

Required Educations and Experience:

  1. Bachelor's degree in English, communications, journalism, or a related field, or equivalent experience.
  2. 5 years of broad administrative/management experience which includes:
    1. 3 years of experience managing serial publications
    2. editing and proofreading
    3. effective oral and written communications
    4. 2 years of experience supervising professional and support staff
    5. experience with planning and budgeting

 Other Desired Qualifications:

  1. Experience with the publication of a scientific, peer-reviewed journal
  2. Experience dealing with major subcontractors
  3. Familiarity with issues in emergency medicine
  4. Association management experience
